I know it sounds silly to make a homemade salsa from a can of tomatoes but I promise you it works! I have been making a ton of Mexican themed dinners to prepare for a Cinco de Mayo celebration, here are a few recipes I have already shared Chili Colorado, homemade salsa and black beans.
Again it was my sister in law, Lorraine, that introduced me to making another great dish and this salsa from a can, while it may sound weird, it works!
Just a few things about Jalapeños
- I used fresh jalapeños, if you do not have any you can put a 4 ounce can of jalapeños in the processor
- Remember that when it comes to chili peppers you never can guarantee the heat of the pepper so while I only used 2 jalapeños, because my jalapeños were not spicy, I think I could have used 3.
- Also if you leave the seed in the jalapeños, it will make the recipe a little more spicy, I left my seeds but will write the instructions to remove the seeds (I like the extra heat)
- Remember to wash your hands after handling the jalapeños or use gloves
Here are my 2 jalapeños that I used
I cut them up and placed them in a food processor with my garlic cloves
process until finely chopped
add the cilantro (optional)
again process until chopped fine…add the canned tomatoes, reserving the juice for later
process until you get the desired texture
add the chopped onions
add the reserved sauce from the can, stir and serve
This is a super easy recipe that uses canned tomatoes…again you can substitute the fresh jalapeños for canned. If you use fresh tomatoes, you may need to add a 4 ounce can of tomato sauce, just depends on the amount of juice each tomato has. Let me know what you think of this recipe when you try it and enjoy!
